Henry Griffin, John Birge elected chair, vice chair of SACUA

Chemistry Prof. Henry C. Griffin has been elected chair of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs (SACUA). John R. Birge, professor of industrial and operations engineering (I&OE), was elected vice chair. They will begin their one-year terms May 1.

Griffin, associate chair in the Department of Chemistry, has served as director of general chemistry and on various departmental committees, including graduate admissions, undergraduate counselors, curriculum, computer and library. In LS&A Griffin has served as a general counselor and on the Curriculum Committee, Computer Committee and Science Learning Center Planning Committee.

He began serving a three-year term on SACUA in 1992. Griffin is a member of the Safety Review Committee (Ford Nuclear Reactor) and the Information Technology General Council. He also served on the Radioactive Drug Review Committee and is past chair of the Radiation Policy Committee.

A member of Senate Assembly since 1991, Birge joined SACUA in September, finishing the unexpired term of nursing Prof. Jean Goeppinger, who resigned.

Birge is a member of the I&OE Curriculum Committee and the College Control Curriculum Coordinating Committee and chair of the I&OE Graduate Program Committee. He also has served as chair of the I&OE Computer Allocation Policy Committee and as a member of Rackham/Cal/Berkeley Forum on Doctoral Studies, the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowhip Committee, the College of Engineering Dean Search Committee and the College of Engineering Nominating Committee.
