Group will make recommendations on move from mainframe environment

An 18-member executive committee has been formed to oversee the transition at the U-M from the Michigan Terminal System (MTS) to a distributed computing environment.

An explosion in recent years of more powerful desktop computers prompted the Information Technology Division (ITD) to look at the future need for its mainframe environment. ITD plans to have many core services in place to replace certain MTS services early next fall.

Five reports from two separate teams that looked at requirements in the University community and projected the future computing environment at the Uni-versity are being used as the basis for the executive committee’s work as it oversees the transition.

The executive committee, chaired by Richard Rockwell, director of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, will not make decisions and will not be a supervisory group. Instead, it will recommend to Provost Gilbert R. Whitaker, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Farris W. Womack and Vice Provost for Information Technology Douglas E. Van Houweling areas at the University in which coordination and cooperation among campus units are critical.

The committee will be sponsoring open forums to discuss plans for new computing services.
