Griffiths named as new ITD executive director, CIO

Jose-Marie Griffiths, currently of the University of Tennessee, will become executive director and chief information officer of the Information Technology Division (ITD). Her appointment to the post, effective Sept. 1, was announced by J. Bernard Machen, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
In this new position, Griffiths will be directly responsible for ITD operations and will work with others to develop and implement strategic planning for information technology at the U-M. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing ITD’s service orientation and fulfilling its mission to provide products and services that its customers will use and depend on for their various information technology needs.
In announcing her appointment, Machen noted that Griffiths’ experience in developing and using a participatory process at Tennessee to establish a vision, long-range plan and organizational structure for computing and telecommunications “will serve her well at the U-M. One of her key responsibilities here will be maintaining and enhancing strategic partnerships with schools, colleges, major administrative units and vendors.”
Griffiths, Machen added, “also will work with others to ensure the University’s national presence in information technology and provide leadership in the development and implementation of University policies to support the achievement of institutional goals in the use of information technology.”
Griffiths has been with the University of Tennessee since 1989 as a professor and collaborating scientist in information science. She also has held a number of administrative posts: acting vice chancellor for information infrastructure (since May 1994), director of the School of Information Sciences (since 1992) and director of the Center for Information Studies (1990-95).
Prior to her tenure at Tennessee, Griffiths was affiliated with King Research Inc. in Rockville, Md., where she was senior research associate (1980-82) and vice president, information systems planning and design (1982-89).
Griffiths was named a University of Tennessee Outstanding Faculty Member in 1995-96 and received special recognition for her research from the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in 1995. Other recent honors include being named the SLA’s Alice Rankin Honored Lecturer in 1994 and the Lazrow Distinguished Lecturer in 1992.
Griffiths holds a B.S. in physics and Ph.D. in information science, both from University College, London University.
