Free parking, escort services enhance nighttime safety

The University Record, October 2, 1995 Several weeks ago, a document listing areas on campus that were available for open parking during evening and night hours was inserted in some copies of The University Record . The insert was not one prepared by the Record staff and contained outdated information. The following is an updated version of safety-related initiatives available during evening hours.

Free parking in some locations

All University parking lots are posted with signs that state the hours of operation—hours that parkers will not be ticketed if they do not have the appropriate parking sticker for the lot.

Free parking is available on Central Campus in the Hill Street structure 5 p.m.–5 a.m. Mon.–Sat. and all of Sun., the Church Street structure 6 p.m.–5 a.m. Mon.–Fri. and all of Sat. and Sun., and Thompson Street structure 6 p.m.—5 a.m. Mon.–Sat. and all Sun. Surface lots include S-5, across from Hutchins Hall, 6 p.m.–5 a.m. Mon.–Fri. and all Sat. and Sun. and lot W13, next to the Student Activities Building, 6 p.m.–5 a.m. Mon.—Fri. and all Sat. and Sun.

Free parking on the Medical Campus is available in the Catherine and Glen structures 6 p.m.–5 a.m. Mon.–Fri. and all weekend. Surface lot M34, behind School of Public Health Building II, is free 6 p.m.–7 a.m. Mon.–Sat. and all Sun. and lot M6, Ann St., is free 6 p.m.–6 a.m. Mon.–Sat. and all Sun.

North Campus lots available for free after-hours parking are NC10 at the School of Music, NC20 adjacent to the G.G. Brown Building, NC22 at the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Building, NC28 next to the Space Physics Research Laboratory and NC43 at the Art and Architecture Building, all open 5 p.m.–5 a.m. Mon.–Fri. and all weekend. NC22 next to Aerospace Engineering, is free 6 p.m.–6 a.m. Mon.–Sat. and all Sun.

Emergency Phones

Faculty, students and staff are encouraged to note the locations of emergency phones, identified by blue lights at the top of a column, as they travel to and from their destinations. The phones are located throughout parking areas and pedestrian routes. They are automatically answered at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and may be used for emergency services as well as general assistance, such as seeking help for a dead battery.
