Florida State controller recommended as associate VP for finance
Following an extensive national search, the appointment of Randy J. Harris as associate vice president for finance will be recommended to the Regents at their March meeting.
If approved by the Regents, Harris, who now is assistant vice president for finance and university controller at Florida State University, will assume his Michigan post May 1. He will succeed Chandler W. Matthews who will retire at the end of April.
In making the announcement, Farris W. Womack, executive vice president and chief financial officer, said: “Randy Harris is a splendid professional with skills and interests that are well suited to Michigan’s needs. We are delighted to have him join us.”
Harris will be responsible for all financial management, control and reporting functions for the University. He will have direct responsibility for the financial controls of a budget that now exceeds $2.3 billion.
Harris was appointed to his current post at Florida State in 1992. His responsibilities have included overseeing departments and programs within the Division of Finance and Administration. He manages a staff of more than 200 in such areas as general accounting, payroll, reports and analysis, investments and treasury functions, federal and state audits, and administrative information and computer systems. Harris also serves as the treasurer of the Florida State University Research Foundation.
In 1990-92 he was a partner in the firm of Dodge, Evans & Harris, performing audits and consultation. In 1980-90 he served as university controller at Weber State University in Utah. From 1973 to 1980, he held various financial positions with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City, including the post of financial manager of the Church’s worldwide missions and temple financial operations. In 1971-73 he worked for Price Waterhouse and Co.
Harris taught accounting and public management at Weber State University and Brigham Young University.
His professional activities have included serving as vice president and president of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants Northern Chapter; Board of Directors, Utah Children’s Aid Society; Board of Directors, Heritage Museum Foundation; member, National Association of College and University Business Officers and the American Institute of Public Accountants.
Harris holds a B.S. and master of public administration from Brigham Young University.
