Flint’s Columbian Quincentennial set for Oct. 5–10

Jorge C. Castaneda, visiting professor of public and international affairs at Princeton University, heads a list of prominent scholars who will help the U-M-Flint commemorate the Columbian Quincen-tennial Oct. 5–10.

Castaneda, co-author of Limits to Friendship: The United States and Mexico, will deliver the keynote address 7–8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Happenings Room on the proposed free trade pact involving the United States and Mexico. A reception will follow in the Ontario Room.

Under the theme “1492–1992: Encounters In The Americas,” the week-long quincentennial program also will include an exhibition of the works of Brazilian artist Bertha Cohen, lectures and panel discussions. A second keynote speaker, Djelal Kadir, professor of literature at the University of Oklahoma-Norman and editor of World Literature Today, will discuss “Columbus and Our Culture Wars” at 4 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Happenings Room.

All events will be held at the Harding Mott University Center and are open to the public. Reservations are required for two lunch programs.

—6–7 p.m., reception for Brazilian artist Bertha Cohen, Ontario Room. Several of Cohen’s works will be on display 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Oct. 5–9 and Oct. 12–16 in the Gallery.

—10 a.m.–noon, lecture by Craig Howe, adjunct lecturer in American Studies, LS&A’s American Culture Program, “Old and New World: Space and Identity,” Happenings Room.

—1–3 p.m., lecture by Jerry Gould, former council member of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe who is on the human resource development staff of the Michigan Department of Transportation, “The Ojibwa of the Lower Michigan Peninsula and their Relations with the U.S.A.,” Happenings Room.

Oct. 8

—9:30–10:45 a.m., lecture by Judith Laikin Elkin from Jean and Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, “Sephardim in the New World,” Michigan Room D.

—11 a.m.–1 p.m., lecture by Kadir, “Columbus the Traveler and Other Travelers: The Dangers of Experience,” Happenings Room.

—7–9:45 p.m., lecture by Kadir, “Columbus and the Ends of the Earth,” Happenings Room.

Oct. 9

—10–11:30 a.m., lecture by David Hanlon, associate professor of history, University of Hawaii-Manoa, “The Columbian Extension: Death and Life in the Pacific,” Happenings Room.

—noon, luncheon lecture by Evelyn Hu-DeHart, director of the Center for Studies in Ethnicity and Race in America, University of Colorado-Boulder, on “Diasporas and the Artificiality of International Boundaries,” Michigan Rooms.
