Jorge C. Castaneda, visiting professor of public and international affairs at Princeton University, heads a list of prominent scholars who will help the U-M-Flint commemorate the Columbian Quincen-tennial Oct. 5–10.
Castaneda, co-author of Limits to Friendship: The United States and Mexico, will deliver the keynote address 7–8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Happenings Room on the proposed free trade pact involving the United States and Mexico. A reception will follow in the Ontario Room.
Under the theme “1492–1992: Encounters In The Americas,” the week-long quincentennial program also will include an exhibition of the works of Brazilian artist Bertha Cohen, lectures and panel discussions. A second keynote speaker, Djelal Kadir, professor of literature at the University of Oklahoma-Norman and editor of World Literature Today, will discuss “Columbus and Our Culture Wars” at 4 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Happenings Room.
All events will be held at the Harding Mott University Center and are open to the public. Reservations are required for two lunch programs.
