Gender studies and international studies are coming together for the fall 1997 Theme Semester, “Genders, Bodies, Borders,” that will bring international perspectives into classes and events that focus on women’s and gender issues.
The theme semester is sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG), the Women’s Studies Program and the International Institute, and funded by LSA and the Ford Foundation. It includes an intriguing blend of speakers, artists, dancers, writers, poets, musicians and films in addition to 45 courses in 24 departments.
The classes and events explore the cultural construction of manhood and womanhood, as well as the political, sociological, psychological, sexual and health aspects of gender around the globe.
Some of the initial events include:
“From Behind the Lens: On Borders and Diaspora,” a talk and video presentation by Berta Palenauala-Jottar, cinematographer and performance professor at New York University, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 20 and Oct. 22 in the Betty Pease Building, Studio B.
“Power, Abuse and Memory: Cognitive Science and Betrayal Trauma Theory,” a talk by Jennifer Freyd, professor of psychology at Oregon University and author of Betrayal Trauma, 4 p.m. Sept. 22, Room 4448 East Hall.
El Norte, a 1983 film by Gregory Nava about a young Guatamalan brother and sister who travel from their village to Los Angeles, the “promised land” of the North, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Michigan Theater.
