Faculty elections for police oversight panel now underway

Elections for the two faculty representatives for the University of Michigan Police Department Oversight Committee are now underway.

Members of the following groups are eligible to vote in the non-Senate faculty election for this position: lecturers, active emeriti, adjunct and clinical faculty members. The newly elected member of the committee will be appointed in May.

Online voting is available now through 5 p.m. on April 22. The candidates are Howard Bromberg, Eric Fretz and Andrea Morrow. Voting more than once or for more than one candidate will result in disqualification.

From April 11-15, the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs also will conduct a similar election for the Faculty Senate member to serve on the committee. Senate members eligible to vote will receive a targeted email with instructions.

The six-member oversight committee consists of two student members, two faculty members (one Senate and one non-Senate faculty), and two staff members (one union and one non-union), who are nominated and elected by their peers for two-year terms.

The committee receives and makes recommendations regarding grievances against any police officer deputized by the university.
