Highly involved and committed to advancing the overall scholarly, academic, social, and cultural goals of the University of Michigan, Peggie Hollingsworth worked assiduously to increase awareness of faculty activities and of the governance system among the broader University community.
Peggie Hollingsworth has based her efforts on the belief that in order to prepare for a future in which social awareness, multiculturalism, and racial and gender diversity have new and expanded roles in the University, the University community must be involved in shaping it. She worked diligently and effectively as chairperson of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs (SACUA) and the Senate Assembly to strengthen channels of communication between members of the University Senate and members of other groups within the University in University governance.
Peggie Hollingsworth was instrumental in developing the annual Davis, Markert, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom as well as the Academic Freedom Lecture Fund. She has worked to bring attention to the vital contributions that academic and intellectual freedom make toward the viability and integrity of the University.
In addition to her contributions in the area of faculty governance, Peggie Hollingsworth is known to members of the University community for her remarkable graciousness, sense of humor, tenacity, and willingness to treat others as equals. For her contributions in the area of faculty governance at the University of Michigan, we are pleased to support SACUA’s selection of Peggie Hollingsworth and present to her the Distinguished Faculty Governance Award.
