FACULTY AWARDS Linda P.B. Katehi, Faculty Recognition Award

Considered one of the world’s experts in the area of microwave and millimeterwave Engineering, Linda Katehi brings distinction to the College of Engineering and the University of Michigan as a distinguished scholar, an outstanding educator, and a valued mentor.

Professor Katehi’s major research contributions on the theoretical side include the accurate determination of radiation and conductor losses in open transmission lines, and the complete dynamic characterization of discontinuities, using integral equation techniques. On the technological side, she pioneered a novel transmission medium, the microshield transmission line. Her research is cited extensively and is referred to in every book published in the last five years on millimeterwave circuit design.

A recipient of her department’s Research Excellence Award, Linda Katehi was selected as a Presidential Young Investigator in 1987, and has also received the prestigious Young Scientist Fellowship Award, presented to only three individuals worldwide.

A superb role model for her students and colleagues, Professor Katehi has substantially improved the curriculum in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, developing software programs to help students visualize complicated concepts. She is a very clear and organized educator, one who has reached the delicate equilibrium that combines understanding the students’ workload with maintaining a very high standard in her teaching.

Over and above all of the accolades describing her work and contributions, it is particularly important to note that Linda Katehi demonstrates a remarkable balance of talent and dedication. She is always ready to lend a hand to others, and one cannot help being impressed by her energy level and her devotion to her students. We are proud to honor Linda Katehi with the Faculty Recognition Award.
