The University of Michigan campus community is invited to join the annual “Party for the Planet” at EarthFest on Thursday.
This sustainability-themed event features free local food, chef demonstrations, live entertainment and games with prizes on the Central Campus Diag from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
“EarthFest is designed to engage, entertain and educate U-M students, faculty and staff on all aspects of sustainability surrounding the university,” said Barbara Hagan, sustainability representative in the Office of Campus Sustainability.
“This festive atmosphere celebrates the work that already has been done on campus. More than 50 sustainability groups will be participating. Attendees can engage with student groups, internal departments and external non profits to identify ways we all can make a difference for Planet Blue.”
Attendees are encouraged to pick up a passport and obtain stamps from the four key areas representing the university’s 2025 sustainability goals: climate action, waste prevention, healthy environments and community awareness. Participants who turn in their completed passport with all four stamps will be entered to win an iPad.
There will be live entertainment from Madelyn Grant, a 2015 U-M graduate of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance and former event organizer, who is performing from noon-1 p.m.
Designed to be a fun and interactive event, highlights include:
• MHealthy chef demonstrations using local ingredients.
• A composting bin to encourage zero-waste.
• Free, local snacks, such as donuts from Washtenaw Dairy and apples from Lesser Farms in Dexter.
U-M has been celebrating the planet for nearly 20 years. EarthFest is organized by students and staff led by the Office of Campus Sustainability.
The event strives to be zero-waste and supports the university’s broader sustainability initiative known as Planet Blue.
