Dumas will serve on national bioethics committee

Rhetaugh G. Dumas, vice provost for health affairs, was appointed to the National Bioethics Advisory Commission by President Clinton on Sept. 16.
The commission, which includes experts in the fields of philosophy, theology, law, medicine, biology, and the behavioral sciences, as well as members of the community, provides guidance to federal agencies on the ethical conduct of current and future human biological and behavioral research.
Dumas, who has been granted administrative leave from the University effective Aug. 1, 1996 through July 31, 1997, said, “I am just delighted to serve my country in this manner.”
Dumas, the Lucille Cole Professor of Nursing, served as dean and professor of the School of Nursing in 1981-1994. Before arriving at Michigan, Dumas was with the National Institute of Mental Health where she served as deputy director of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (1979-1981), and chief of the Psychiatric Nursing Education Branch of the Division of Manpower and Training Programs (1972-1976).
