Fermi Award Nominations Invited
The U.S. Department of Energy invites nominations for the Enrico Fermi Award, one of the oldest and most prestigious science and technology awards given by the U.S. government. The Fermi Award recognizes people of international stature for their lifetime of exceptional achievements in the development, use or control of nuclear energy (broadly defined). The award includes a citation signed by the president and Secretary of Energy, a gold medal and a $100,000 honorarium. Nominations are due Sept. 15. The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) has background and application materials. If necessary, OVPR can assist in preparing nominations. 1997 Announcement of Opportunity for Science/Education Teams
The National Science Foundation, in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, invites the submission of proposals for participation in the science and education component of the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program. GLOBE is seeking proposals in five specific areas: Atmosphere/Climate, Hydrology, Land Cover/Biology, Soil and Global Positioning System. GLOBE Web site: www.globe.gov. Deadline: Oct. 15. Washtenaw Council for the Arts

Peaceful Applications of Nuclear Science
The Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project offers support for faculty research in peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology and the associated implications. This may include work in engineering and in the physical, biological, health, and social sciences. The applicant must be a member of the University’s regular teaching and/or research faculty. Faculty Grants and Fellowships Program
The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies invites applications for its 1997 Faculty Research Grants and Fellowships program. Faculty members may apply for both a grant and a fellowship to be used at the same time, but the total dollar amount of both awards cannot exceed $15,000. The primary objective is to assist promising junior faculty in establishing and sustaining an active program of research and scholarship or of creative activities in the arts. Consideration is also given to senior faculty who are entering a new line of inquiry.
