Classical Clarinet and Piano by Donald Grant and Dr. Gregory Sulik on May 21, and Jazz Standards by Susan Chastain and James Dapogny on May 28, are free performances presented this spring from 12:10-1 p.m. at the University Hospital Main Lobby.
An accomplished clarinetist and doctor of musical arts, Grant began his formal training in the U.S. Navy School of Music. He went to Europe to study with French clarinetist Marcel Amiel and Vincent Morales of Barcelona, Spain. Grant has held principal clarinet positions in orchestras around the country.
Detroit native Sulik is both a formally trained pianist and medical doctor. He has a master’s degree of musical performance from Eastern Michigan University, and earned his medical degree from the U-M Medical School.
On tour from Marquette, this duo will perform works by composers including Johannes Brahms, Paul Hindemith and Francis Poulenc.
The duo of Chastain and Dapogny perform the following week. Known in jazz circles in Ann Arbor and around the country, Dapogny recently retired after 40 years of teaching at the School of Music, Theater and Dance. He continues, after 30 years, to lead his Grammy-nominated Chicago Jazz Band.
Chastain is the owner of Ann Arbor’s award-winning jazz venue the Firefly Club, and performs there regularly.
The duo will perform a form of music that emerged during the turbulent 1920s, ’30s and ’40s in the United States. It paired two distinct styles U+00E2U+0080U+0093 popular show and movie tunes aptly called “standards” and the new musical style called jazz — to create a powerful musical tradition.
