Director recommended as College of Engineering dean

Stephen W. Director, a nationally recognized leader in undergraduate engineering education and expert in computer -aided design, has been named dean of College of Engineering.
Pending approval by the Board of Regents at its April 18-19 meeting, Director’s appointment will be effective July 1. He also will serve as a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, with tenure.
Provost J. Bernard Machen said, “I am personally very pleased and excited about this appointment. In Steve Director, the College will have an outstanding leader with vision for engineering, a strong national reputation, and a proven record of accomplishments. I am confident he will provide the leadership necessary to guide the College through the challenging years ahead.”
Director is currently dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as the U.A. and Helen Whitaker Professor of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and professor of computer science. Prior to his 1991 appointment as dean of the Carnegie-Mellon College of Engineering, Director served as head of the Department of Electrical and Computer E ngineering and director of the SRC Center of Excellence for Computer-Aided Design.
Director joined the Carnegie Mellon faculty as a professor of electrical engineering in 1977. From 1968 to 1977, he was a member of the electrical engineering faculty at the University of Florida.
He received his B.S. degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1965 and his M.S. (1967) and Ph.D. degrees (1968) from the University of California at Berkeley.
Director was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1989 for pioneering contributions in computer-aided circuit design and leadership in electrical engineering education. He has received several national awards for papers published in engineering journals.
Director has served as a technical consultant in the field of computer-aided design to many private companies. He is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Sigma Xi and Eta Kappa Nu (electrical engineering honorary society).
He is the author of six books on circuit theory or VLSI design and more than 150 articles published in academic journals or conference proceedings.
