Dial-in access numbers to change
Busy signals that have plagued computer users who dial in to the University’s modem pool to gain access to either the Internet or University computer services may soon become a thing of the past. By the end of May, three new telephone numbers will be available to modem users accessing the University’s data networks, and five existing dial-in numbers will be discontinued. New and more versatile hardware will support dial-in service to 500 modems.
Increased surfing on the Internet by those not affiliated with the University has created a phone-line traffic jam that the Information Technology Division has been scrambling to keep up with, especially during prime evening connection hours. The new modem pools provide two telephone numbers that will be available only to University users and three that can be accessed by either U-M users or those affiliated with another University in the Merit system who need to access one of the Ann Arbor local numbers. All will require a login ID (Uniqname for U-M users) and a password for access.
Dial-in users may experience temporary interruptions in network access as the hardware replacements are made. Changes are expected to take about four to six hours each, during which time the connection to the modem pool being changed will be unreliable. Connection attempts made while a pool is being worked on may result in busy signals, ringing open (no answer), or a connection that gets disconnected without warning as wires and equipment are moved.
Some users who have been dialing in may need to change their modem settings. For more specific information regarding changes in the University’s dial-in service, please consult the May issue of the Information Technology Digest. Assistance can also be obtained by calling the Information Technology Division’s consultant group at 764-HELP.
