Robert Ray of the Michigan Flagpole Co. in Garden City scaled the 164-foot flagpole on the Diag April 28 to replace the ball and platform that were damaged in a windstorm the week before. Lee Miller, a foreman in the Plant Department, said the University replaces the 20-by-40-foot flag every three months.
Ray began his ascent at 9:30 a.m. and the flag was in place by 12:30 p.m., in time for the 3 p.m. ceremony at Hill Auditorium honoring doctoral candidates and Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies master’s degree candidates. Photos by Rebecca A. Doyle

Patch Adams helps celebrate opening of new Brighton Health Center
Hunter ‘Patch’ Adams, on hand to help officially open the U-M Health Center in Brighton, demonstrated some of his philosophy of medicine and life to medical students who asked about his methods and requested autographs. First-year medical student Matt DeJohn (at left) asked Adams how patients responded to touching and was rewarded with a firsthand demonstration.
