Rep. John D. Dingell received a Distinguished Leadership Award from the U-M-Dearborn at its commencement ceremony April 25.
The award recognizes “individuals who have made a significant contribution to the welfare and development of the U-M-Dearborn.”
“John Dingell has made enormous con-tributions that have benefited not only this campus, but all of the communities in the Detroit metropolitan area, in ways that are too numerous to count,” said Chancellor James C. Renick.
Dingell, who has represented Michigan’s 16th District for 37 years, is chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the most influential posts in Congress.
He has been instrumental in drafting and enacting legislation on energy, health, consumer and environmental protection, telecommunications technology development, railroads, and the regulation of securities and financial markets. He also has been instrumental in protecting millions of acres of wetlands and in controlling pollution in the Great Lakes.
Dingell has long been a supporter of programs to improve environmental conditions along the Rouge River, including the watershed teacher enhancement program that recently received a $1.35 million National Science Foundation grant.
