Conference will focus on entrepreneurship in nonprofits
Nonprofit Enterprise at Work, an incubation and support center for nonprofit organizations in Ann Arbor, will examine “Nonprofits as Entrepreneurs—Reaching New Heights” at its third annual Working Together for a Better Community conference series. The conference will be held 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 16) at Washtenaw Community College. U-M sponsors for the event include the School of Social Work, the Business School, the Law School, the College of Engineering and the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations.
The conference will provide ideas and pointers on how nonprofit organizations can become more entrepreneurial in day-to-day business, examine the legal issues and logistics of strategic planning for nonprofit business ventures, and highlight models of nonprofit entrepreneurial accomplishment from the region and other parts of the country.
William Strickland, CEO of Bidwell Training Center, Pittsburgh, will kick off the conference with a presentation about the vocational training school that he heads. Thomas McLaughlin, senior associate at BDO Seidman L.L.P., Boston, will look at the personality traits, strengths and weaknesses of an entrepreneurial leader.
One of the breakout sessions during the day will examine the Entrepreneurship and Economic Development program at the U-M. This new partnership between the Business School and the School of Social Work applies the principles of entrepreneurship to low-income communities.
The lead corporate sponsor for the event is Great Lakes Bancorp, with additional support from the Ann Arbor News and Espresso Royale Caffe.
