Commencement visitors advised to avoid construction

Ongoing construction on the Stadium Boulevard bridge has resulted in a reduced number of lanes that could make travel difficult for the 35,000-40,000 guests expected to attend Spring Commencement on May 2.

To avoid major backups, event planners encourage participants to come early, consider alternate routes, or park and ride one of the shuttle buses that will run before and after the event.

For those planning to drive, the following alternative routes are suggested:

• If driving on I-94, use Ann Arbor-Saline Road (exit 175), rather than State Street.

• From campus, use Ann Arbor-Saline Road (exit from campus, take an alternative street to Main Street, such as Hill) and continue south on Main Street toward the stadium.

Guests and graduates are welcome to use the complimentary shuttle bus service for travel to and from Michigan Stadium. It will run approximately every 20 minutes from 7:45 a.m.- 9:30 a.m. Guests may park and ride from the State Street Commuter Lot (2600 South State Street).

Those staying at hotels on the shuttle routes and those staying at hotels within walking distance of the pick-up locations are encouraged to use the shuttles. Return shuttles run regularly for 60 minutes after the end of the ceremony. Detailed shuttle schedules can be found on the Commencement Web site www.commencement.umich.edu/spring/instructions.html#tran.

Commencement begins at 10 a.m., the graduate procession starts at 9 a.m. and the gates to Michigan Stadium are open at 8 a.m.
