Cole will be general counsel for NCAA

Elsa Kircher Cole, outgoing U-M general counsel, has been appointed general counsel for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

In what is a new position for the NCAA, Cole will be responsible for management of all legal issues affecting the association, as well as the approval and supervision of outside counsel retained by the NCAA.

“This appointment completes a national search, and we have hired an outstanding individual,” said NCAA Executive Director Cedric W. Dempsey in announcing the appointment April 14.

“Elsa Cole comes to the NCAA with great experience in university administration and excellent understanding of the issues the Association has to confront.”

When Cole announced her resignation in February, President Lee C. Bollinger said he was “grateful for Elsa’s many years of service to the University. She has ably led the University’s legal team and has contributed to the advancement of the institution in many ways.”

Cole has been general counsel since 1989 and for the past four years has chaired the state legal officers subcommittee of the President’s Council of State Colleges and Universities in Michigan.
