The University’s Chicano History Week, Feb. 6–12, commemorates the life of human rights leader Cesar Chavez with events dedicated to his memory.

“We feel it is important to reflect on his life, what his death means for many people, and to publicly recognize the passage of a man who shaped history—labor history, Chicano history and national history—in this country,” says Amy Holmes of the Socially Active Latino Student Association (SALSA).

Events scheduled this week are:

Group discussion on “Chicano/a Identity and Intergroup Relations within the Latino Community,” 7 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 8), Trotter House.

Readings by Chicano poets Carlos Cumpian and Raul Nino, 7 p.m. Friday (Feb. 11), Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union.

A dance with live band “Grupo Aldaco,” 9 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 12), Michigan League Ballroom. Tickets are available at the TicketMaster outlet in the Michigan Union.

All events are organized by SALSA and sponsored by the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Latino/Latina Studies Program, Michigan Student Assembly and the Rackham Office of Minority Affairs.
