CEW gets birthday present

Pat Rigot (left), chair of the Alumnae Council’s Birthday Greeting Committee, recently presented a check for $30,000 to Carol Hollenshead, director of the Center for the Education of Women (CEW).

The Council annually sponsors the greeting program—now a 35-year-old initiative—to recognize and fund projects that have a direct relationship to the advancement of women at the U-M. In fact, a 1964 Birthday Greeting provided half the funds required to establish CEW.

The program gives U-M alumnae an opportunity to “celebrate the University’s influence on their lives by `giving back’ to a program related to women,” the Alumnae Council says.

Hollenshead said the funds “will give us the capacity to respond flexibly to the emerging needs of women students.”

Prior recipients of the funds include Henderson House Women’s Cooperative, Lydia Mendelssohn Theater, Camp Michigania’s Education Center and several endowed scholarships. Next year’s recipient will be the Critical Difference Emergency Grant Program at U-M Flint.

Applications for the 1998 recipient are being accepted. For information, contact Shelly Yee, 763-9752, or send e-mail to [email protected].
