Campus invited to community assembly on diversity Nov. 10

The campus community is invited to an interactive assembly Nov. 10 to provide President Mark Schlissel with input and ideas regarding U-M’s efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion.

The assembly from 9-11 a.m. at Rackham Auditorium will be emceed by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Clarence Page, and is part of a campuswide diversity summit Nov. 4-13 that includes a variety of public and private events.

The summit comes at the start of a yearlong process to develop a comprehensive strategic plan to improve diversity.

Students, faculty and staff from every campus unit are being asked to design plans that ultimately will be incorporated into a universitywide strategy by September 2016, with implementation and evaluation through 2021.

The community assembly will be streamed live online for those unable to attend in person. Other public events during the November summit include:

• A public lecture featuring former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, late afternoon (time to be determined) Nov. 5, Rackham Amphitheatre.

• Reflections on U-M’s Diversity History, 4 p.m. Nov. 9, Ballroom, Michigan League.

• Leadership for Diversity in Higher Education: A Systemwide Commitment, 4-5:30 p.m. Nov. 11, Rackham Amphitheatre.

• Staff Committee Report on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, 1:30-3 p.m. Nov. 12, Michigan Room, Michigan League.

• UMHS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Cafe Event, 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Nov. 13, Towsley Lobby (for UMHS only).
