Power, Dumas Award winners ceremony Feb. 12

A ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Hussey Room at the Michigan League, to announce the winners of the 2014 Sarah Goddard Power Award, and the 2014 Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award. The Power Award winners are Dr. Juanita L. Merchant, H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastrointestinal Sciences and professor of internal medicine and molecular and integrative physiology, and Dr. Lisa A. Newman, professor of surgery and director of the Breast Care Center. The Dumas Award will go to Health Behavior and Health Education in the School of Public Health.

UM-Flint is fastest-growing state university

UM-Flint can claim the fastest-growing title among state universities, based on figures recently released by the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan. UM-Flint had the highest percentage increase in fall 2013 with an enrollment jump of 3.21 percent. In the past decade, UM-Flint has claimed the fastest-growing title five times. From 2004-13, enrollment has soared over 38 percent, the largest percentage gain among Michigan’s 15 public universities.

Grant to enhance emergency medicine in Ghana

The Taubman Health Sciences Library has received an Elsevier Foundation grant to finance the enhancement of education, research and practice in emergency medicine in Ghana. The award is part of the foundation’s Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries program, which funds innovation in improving access and use of scientific, technical and medical information. The project, “Information skills training in emergency care: Strengthening research and healthcare capacity in Ghana,” funded for two years, is in conjunction with the Ghana Emergency Medicine Collaborative.

Nominations sought for 2014 Johnson Diversity Service Award

Named in honor of Harold R. Johnson, dean emeritus of the School of Social Work, the Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award was established in 1996 to recognize faculty whose service contributes to the development of a culturally and ethnically diverse campus community. Five awards are made annually and include a $5,000 stipend.  Nominees must be full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty on the Ann Arbor campus.  Nominations are welcome from faculty, staff, and students.
