Detroit Center presents Open House Oct. 16

A U-M Detroit Center Open House is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-noon Oct. 16. Participants include Detroit Center resident units, and heavy users such as the Teach for America program, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, the Michigan Engineering Zone and the Undergraduate Admissions Office. The purpose is to help celebrate the center’s 10th anniversary, and showcase and inform the public about center activities and provide opportunities for new community and funding partners-collaborations

Exhibit and symposium honor life of artist, DAAS co-founder  

The university community is invited to the exhibit and symposium “Jon Onye Lockard, The Life and Journey of a Visual Griot” Oct. 11-12 to honor the legacy of a founding faculty member of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, LSA. Lockard, who died March 25 at 83, was a world-renowned master painter and muralist. “Lockard, Master Muralist,” a reception and exhibit, is from 2-5 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Ambatana Lounge, South Quad. A symposium and exhibit are presented from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Alumni Center, Founders Room. RSVP at [email protected].

UMMA, Matthaei-Nichols win federal museum and library services grants

The U-M Museum of Art and Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum have received grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support projects that enhance experiences for the community. UMMA has received $150,000 to support its Engaged Learning Collections Access Project to create and enhance data for 5,000 works of art in the museum’s permanent collection. Matthaei-Nichols received a $76,900 grant to digitally map and document the condition of its historic landscape collection at the Arboretum.

Make an impact with the 2016 R01 Boot Camp Program

The Medical School Office of Research is currently accepting applications by Oct. 16 for the 2016 Cohort of its Mentored Research Academy: R01 Boot Camp, for both coaches and mentees. This is the third year of the successful mentoring program to support and increase the success rate of Medical School faculty members applying for their first NIH Research Project Grant or equivalent grants. UM-Dearborn partners with firm to offer car sharing on campus

University of Michigan-Dearborn has launched a partnership with car sharing network Zipcar to offer a car-sharing program on campus. The transportation option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older. The cars have designated parking spots at The Union at Dearborn, adjacent to campus, for pick-up and return. Gas, insurance and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in car rates.
