Give Kids a Smile draws 38 for free dental care

Several clinical faculty members joined dental hygiene students from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and two private practice dentists to provide more than $9,000 in free dental care to children during this year’s Give Kids a Smile program. The annual event, held at the school March 28, is part of an American Dental Association program. Thirty-eight children, ages 5 to 14, were seen in the school’s dental clinics.

Faculty, staff encouraged to submit Fostering Innovation Grants ideas

The U-M Health System Fostering Innovation Grants is accepting applications for innovative ideas. FIGs has awarded more than $1.7 million since 2005 to help teams pilot projects and implement new ideas. Check out the FIGs resources page at umms.med.umich.edu/figs/figs_start.htm for ideas and tips on how to submit ideas and apply before April 29. Past awardees can see the awardees page for suggestions to keep a project going and learn how the FIGs team can provide support.

U-M captures second place in national tournament

For the second consecutive year, the U-M Debate Team won second place at the National Debate Tournament. The team of seniors Alexander Pappas and Ellis Allen defeated Michigan State University on a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals and Harvard University in the semifinals on a 4-1 decision, but lost to Northwestern University on a 3-2 decision in the final round. The 69th annual tournament April 3-6 at the University of Iowa drew the top 78 teams in the country.
