UM-Dearborn fall commencement ceremonies scheduled for Dec. 15

The University of Michigan-Dearborn will host two commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 at the Fieldhouse. The morning ceremony, recognizing graduates of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Business, will begin at 10 a.m. The afternoon ceremony, for graduates of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, and the College of Education, Health, and Human Services, will begin at 3 p.m. UM-Dearborn alumna Emily Kolinski Morris, chief economist at Ford Motor Co., will be the keynote speaker for both ceremonies. As chief economist, Morris manages the corporate economics group with major responsibility for the company’s global economic and automotive industry forecasts supporting business strategy, finance and planning.

U-M to host Higher Education Data Warehousing Forum Conference

The Higher Education Data Warehousing Forum is a network of higher education representatives dedicated to sharing knowledge about data management, best practices, data warehousing designs, institutional reporting strategies and more. HEDW is now accepting proposals for the upcoming 2019 HEDW Forum Conference, April 14-17, hosted by U-M at the Sheraton Ann Arbor Hotel. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 15 and the submission form can be found at myumi.ch/6wD7w. Conference registration will open on Jan. 15. For more information, visit myumi.ch/J7E9Z. Typical conference topics include data governance, data-informed culture, data quality, metadata and data definitions, data modeling and project and program management.

Nominations sought for Shirley Verrett Award

The Women of Color in the Academy Project is currently seeking nominations for the annual Shirley Verrett Award, which recognizes a faculty member whose work — teaching, performance and scholarship or service — supports the success of female students or faculty in the arts who come from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. The annual Shirley Verrett Award celebration will be in late February. The exact date will be announced in December. Established in 2012, the award honors the late Shirley Verrett, James Earl Jones Distinguished University Professor of Voice at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. It is available to all tenured or tenure-track faculty, lecturers and clinical faculty at U-M’s Ann Arbor campus, and carries a $5,000 prize. Nominations sought for President’s award for international education

In celebration of International Education Week, the Office of the President is seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education, an award program recognizing and celebrating faculty and staff whose extraordinary efforts advance international education for U-M students. Michigan Medicine earns ‘A’ for patient safety efforts

Michigan Medicine has once again been recognized for its patient safety efforts. The organization earned an ‘A’ in patient safety by the Leapfrog Group, one of the top honors in the health care industry. Leapfrog utilizes a number of methodologies in order to compile its grades. Among them, a top hospital must meet vigorous standards when it comes to ICU physician staffing, meet Leapfrog’s standard for Computerized Physician Order Entry, which limits medication errors, and meet or surpass standards in 18 measurable categories.
