Volunteers needed for MSTAFF200 bicentennial celebration

University of Michigan officials are seeking volunteers to help out during MSTAFF200, the bicentennial celebration centering on the contributions of staff members. The celebration will take place 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 27 on Ingalls Mall and the Diag. Volunteers are needed for various jobs before, during and after the event. Most shifts are two hours, and volunteers can sign up for more than one shift. Those interested in volunteering must sign up by Friday (June 9). U-M bicentennial app released

In honor of the university’s bicentennial, the School of Information has created MGoView, the Bicentennial Celebration Augmented Reality Experience. MGoView provides an interactive look at the university’s rich history through its buildings, landmarks and people. MGoView is a mobile application for iOS and Android, as well as a website optimized for Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer. The platform explores 30 sites and more than 50 hand-crafted digital and historical artifacts. Community members can now download the app from Google Play and iTunes.

UM-Dearborn adds new small business management major

UM-Dearborn has created a new small business management major to ensure students are prepared for whatever business venture they choose to pursue in the future. The program, which starts this fall, will combine knowledge areas needed to thrive in a competitive market, from human resources management to accounting to personal selling. Karen Strandholm, chair of the UM-Dearborn Department of Strategy and Management Studies, said the curriculum is designed for the small business environment, where workers must be flexible. In addition to regional data indicating an increase in demand for bachelor-level small business management professionals, Strandholm said students and community members have shared that they wanted a program tailored to small business.

Michigan Medicine honored for commitment to environment

Michigan Medicine was recently honored for its commitment to sustainability and its work to protect the environment. The organization earned Practice Greenhealth’s Partner for Change Award, which recognizes superior performance in environmental sustainability. Organizations that earn Partner for Change designation have demonstrated commitment to continuously developing, improving and expanding upon programs to eliminate mercury; sourcing products sustainably; recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste; and reducing regulated medical waste.

UM-Flint School of Nursing to undergo expansion

The UM-Flint’s School of Nursing is slated for a major expansion to its pre-licensure undergraduate nursing programs. The school received approval from the Michigan Board of Nursing to increase the number of students in its pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs from 120 to 176 starting in January 2018. The school was officially created in November 2016. It was previously a department within the School of Health Professions and Studies. The school offers both traditional and accelerated second-degree BSN programs for those who do not already hold a registered nurse license.

Applications sought for Interprofessional Exchange grants

U-M faculty from all three campuses are invited to apply for Interprofessional Exchange grants. First announced in winter 2017 by the U-M Health Sciences Council, this new research stimulus program has more than $1.5 million of funding available over three-year period. Proposals for grants are due at 5 p.m. June 14. Grants will support research focused on the health outcomes and value of interprofessional exchange in education, policy, research, care and service. Record email shifts to weekly summer schedule

The email edition of The University Record will be sent on a weekly basis to subscribers each Wednesday during the rest of the spring and summer. Daily emails will resume with the start of the fall semester Sept. 5. Although the daily email is taking a vacation, the Record website will be updated with campus news for faculty and staff. The summertime weekly email will provide a summary of items added to the website during the previous week. Special email versions may be sent in the event of major news for which immediate notification is determined to be necessary. The Record’s remaining summer print publication schedule is June 19, July 3 and 24, and Aug. 14. The Record will resume its regular weekly print edition Sept. 5.
