New suicide prevention videos from CAPS

The University of Michigan’s Counseling and Psychological Services has released videos to educate faculty who can assist students who may be thinking of suicide. Part of the “Do something: Stop Student Suicide” initiative, the video focuses on what contributes to thoughts of suicide among U-M students, provides suicide-prevention information and highlights the role faculty can play in supporting students. CAPS is the main unit on campus responsible for providing student mental health services. The center provides confidential psychological and psychiatric services for the U-M community. The videos were made possible by a donation from the Confidence Foundation on behalf of Joshua and Cory Logan. See the videos online at tinyurl.com/jvtted8 and tinyurl.com/mo3om6a.

Ann Arbor campus recognized as Tree Campus USA

The university’s efforts to promote healthy trees and environmental stewardship has earned the Ann Arbor campus recognition as a Tree Campus USA institution for the ninth consecutive year. Some of the efforts that earned the certification include having a tree advisory committee, maintaining a campus tree-care plan, dedicating annual funding for routine tree maintenance and hosting volunteer days to remove invasive species from the North Campus woodlots. Launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota, this national program awards college campuses and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging the campus community to make a healthier, more sustainable world. Mike Rutkofske, university forester and Tree Advisory Committee member, will accept the recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation on Tuesday in East Lansing.

Robert Ortega to chair faculty governance in coming year

Robert Ortega, professor of social work, will chair U-M’s central faculty governance system for 2017-18. The Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, central faculty governance’s nine-member executive arm, approved Ortega by acclamation at its meeting April 3. He was the sole person to declare intentions to run for the leadership position. Ortega also will chair the Senate Assembly and the Faculty Senate. His term begins May 1 and he succeeds William Schultz, professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, and naval architecture and marine engineering. The vice chair has not yet been determined.
