Stamps School of Art & Design announces new downtown gallery space

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design has announced it will open a new gallery space in downtown Ann Arbor in the first floor of the McKinley Towne Center at 201 S. Division Street, between Liberty Street and Washington Street. Starting in winter 2017, the Stamps Gallery will house rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and design, including work by Stamps students, faculty and alums. With nearly 8,000 square feet of exhibition space, the Stamps Gallery replaces Work Gallery (306 S. State St.) and Slusser Gallery (2000 Bonisteel Blvd.). Slusser Gallery has been converted into fresh studio space — referred to as the “Work Commons” — for Stamps undergraduates. “The Stamps Gallery offers us a larger and more expansive space to support more ambitious exhibition and curatorial programs,” said Guna Nadarajan, dean of the Stamps School. “The space will allow us to show works that fuel our students’ education and give them hands-on opportunities in exhibition participation, promotion, curation, and design.”

Taubman College establishes Charles Correa International Lecture

University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced the Charles Correa International Lecture Fund in honor and memory of renowned Indian architect,  activist and U-M alumnus Charles Correa. The fund will endow an annual lecture at U-M by an emerging architect engaged with global architecture and activism to promote cultural understanding through design. “We anticipate this annual lecture will not only add a critical resource to bring diverse voices to campus but also celebrate and inspire the many international students and alumni who are an important part of the college community,” said Robert Fishman, Taubman College interim dean and professor of architecture and urban and regional planning. The inaugural Charles M. Correa International Lecture will be delivered in September 2017, during the U-M bicentennial year. An exhibition of Correa’s work will follow the lecture.
