CAI accepting funding proposals for three project types

The Center for Academic Innovation is accepting faculty proposals for projects related to workforce development skills, leveraging generative artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, and developing professional skills such as teamwork and project management.

Funded projects would lead to the development of open online courses, the use of generative AI in residential and online education, and the exploration of new pedagogical strategies using the extended-reality technology of Apple Vision Pro devices.

Accepted proposals receive funding and support through the university’s Academic Innovation Fund, which may include stipends, funding for project-related expenses, and in-kind development support from the center’s staff.

Currently celebrating its 10th year, the Academic Innovation Fund already has funded more than 375 projects featuring more than 400 faculty from the Ann Arbor campus’ 19 schools and colleges.

In addition to inviting faculty to submit ideas for open online courses, the center is engaging with academic unit leaders to explore new opportunities to establish or refine their online and hybrid portfolio strategy, and explore the development of certificate program concepts that align with an academic unit’s vision for the growth of their online portfolio.

Open online courses call for proposals

The center is seeking proposals that address industry applications of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, and professional skills such as teamwork and project management.

  • Deadline: Nov. 22, 2024
  • Funding and support: Faculty leads of successfully launched courses could be eligible for a stipend of up to $25,000, in-kind support from the center, funding for course development assistants, and potential for shared revenue.
  • Consultation: Consultation with center staff before submitting a proposal is required.
  • Eligibility: Projects must be submitted by a faculty member of the Ann Arbor campus, and be submitted to and accompanied by a letter of support from the appropriate college or school administrator before submission to the center.

Generative AI call for proposals

The center is seeking proposals supporting generative AI’s application in teaching and learning. Proposals that leverage the university’s U-M GPT or explore new platforms to support assessment and feedback using generative AI, using generative AI tools as a collaborative partner, tools that improve equity and access, and the use of generative AI technologies to foster curiosity and critical thinking are highly encouraged.

  • Deadline: Dec. 13, 2024
  • Funding and support: Up to $15,000 for project-related expenses, in-kind instructional design, project management, technical assistance from the center, and funding to hire student assistants.
  • Consultation: Consultation with center staff before submitting a proposal is encouraged.
  • Eligibility: Projects must be submitted by a faculty member of the Ann Arbor campus, and include a budget and technical support outline. Projects proposing the use of new generative AI tools must pass the center’s third-party tool evaluation framework.

Apple Vision Pro XR application call for proposals

The center is seeking proposals that advance learning and innovative pedagogies across educational contexts using Apple Vision Pro and its extended reality capabilities. Potential applications could include those focused on classroom innovation, training and professional development, student skill development, and expanding online degree offerings.

  • Deadline: Dec. 13, 2024
  • Funding and support: Up to $25,000 for project-related expenses, in-kind instructional design, project management, media production, and technical assistance.
  • Consultation: Consultation with center staff before submitting a proposal is encouraged.
  • Eligibility: Projects must be submitted by a faculty member of the U-M Ann Arbor campus, and include a budget and technical support outline.
