Bollinger will begin term Feb. 1
Lee C. Bollinger will take office as the 12th president of the University on Feb. 1, interim President Homer A. Neal announced at the start of the Thanksgiving recess.
Bollinger will move to Ann Arbor in early January and use the month as a transitional period. He will be on campus throughout the month, except for a one-week period when he will be attending an academic conference at the University of Haifa in Israel.
Bollinger said he and the Regents agreed that this transitional month is the best way for him to learn about the longer-range challenges facing the University. Robben W. Fleming used a similar transitional period before becoming president of the University on Jan. 1, 1968. Fleming spent four months on campus prior to taking office; he shadowed President Harlan Hatcher, met with deans, faculty members, students and alumni, and learned about the University and community.
Bollinger will become an employee of the University on Jan. 1.
