November marks the celebrated rivalry between U-M and Ohio State — not just on the football field but also in donating blood through Nov. 20 during the 28th annual Blood Battle.

“Students at Michigan love an opportunity to show their school spirit, especially when facing our biggest rival, so both Michigan and OSU use that rivalry to bring in more donors,” says Carrie Schalm, a U-M Blood Battle chair. “For example, one of our catch-phrases this year is ‘Bleed Maize and Blue to Beat OSU.’ “
In the same spirit, the university has teamed up with Gift of Life Michigan for the 4th annual Wolverine vs. Buckeyes Challenge for Life, which seeks signed organ donor registrations. To sign up for the organ registry challenge, go to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry at www.giftoflifemichigan.org/

To celebrate the Blood Battle, the American Red Cross will raffle off two tickets to see the Wolverines take on the Buckeyes at the last game of this season in the Big House. Anyone who attempts to donate will be eligible to be entered into the raffle to receive two tickets to the game.
Organizers ask those who have never given blood to consider making a donation, and remind loyal donors that now would be a great time to give the gift of life once again. They also urge donors to eat iron-rich foods and drink lots of water before donating.
“It is important to donate in Blood Battle because every two seconds someone needs blood, and by donating just one pint you can help save up to three lives,” Schalm says. “Most of the blood donated at Blood Battle is used at the University Hospital and other institutions in Washtenaw County.”
In addition to Schalm, this year’s Blood Battle chairs are Katy Wallander, Mary Rock and Tim Hinkley. U-M administrators overseeing the event are E. Royster Harper, vice president for student affairs, and Dr. Ora Pescovitz, executive vice president for medical affairs.
