Baier and SpradlinHenry D. Baier, director of occupational safety and environmental health, has been named interim associate vice president for business operations, effective May 18. He succeeds Paul Spradlin, who had been interim associate vice president since Jan. 1996.

Baier’s appointment was approved by the Regents at their May meeting.

“Hank Baier has led the University as it has made significant progress in a number of highly important, visible areas,” noted Executive Vice President Robert Kasdin. “He is widely respected throughout the Business Operations units, across the University, and in the Ann Arbor community more broadly.”

Baier will be responsible for Plant Operations, Plant Extension, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health and the Department of Public Safety.

“Paul Spradlin’s service to the University has spanned 47 years,” Kasdin said. “He serves with dedication to the highest standards and sensitivity to the educational mission of the institution. After discussion, I have persuaded Paul to continue to serve the University on a part-time basis and I will continue to value his counsel. I will soon be forming a search committee to identify the individual who will assume the responsibilities on a permanent basis.”

Baier has been with the University since 1992. He received his B.S. from Ferris State University in 1984 and his M.S. from the U-M in 1986.
