Daniel E. Atkins, dean of the School of Information, announced last week that he is resigning the deanship for personal reasons. His resignation was effective Sept. 22.
Provost Nancy Cantor will recommend to the Regents at their Oct. 15-16 meeting that Gary Olson, associate dean of the School of Information, be appointed as interim dean. His appointment would be effective retroactively to Sept. 23. Olson is a professor of psychology as well as professor in the School of Information.
“I have complete confidence in Gary Olson’s ability to continue to move the School of Information forward as we prepare to conduct a national search for a permanent dean,” Cantor said.
Atkins will return to the faculty as professor of information and professor of electrical engineering and computer science. He has served as dean of the School of Information since July 1992. The School, formerly called the School of Information and Library Studies, changed its name in 1996.
