Asian Pacific American month features discussion, dance, music and comedy
The University will observe Asian Pacific American Heritage Month beginning this week with an array of cultural and educational events.
Coordinated by Minority Student Services and the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), the month-long celebration will feature some 20 different events, ranging from discussions on ac ademic and social issues to performances of dance, music and comedy.
“The Asian Pacific American population is rich in tradition and diversity, but is often ignored in the community,” says Marie Ting, OAMI program coordinator. “We feel that it’s appropriate to inform Ann Arbor and the state as a who le about the work of the Asian Pacific American community to educate not only its own people, but all peoples.”
Events scheduled for this week:
“Asian Pacific Americans in the Workplace” panel discussion, 4 p.m. today (March 19) in the Michigan Union’s Kuenzel Room.
“Korean Campus Crusade for Christ Show: Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” 7 p.m. Fri. (March 22) in Auditorium B, Angell Hall.
Asian American Association’s 25th Birthday Bash Spring Dance, 10 p.m. Fri. (March 22) in the Michigan League Ballroom.
Korean Cultural Arts Festival, with afternoon activities 1–4 p.m.; dinner at 6 p.m.; and a cultural show at 8 p.m. Sat. (March 23) in the Michigan League Ballroom.
Dem Vietnam Cultural Celebration, 7 p.m. Sat. (March 23) at Scarlett Middle School, 3300 Lorraine St., Ann Arbor.
Other highlights of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month include a performance by Filipino American comedian Christy Medrano at 7 p.m. March 28 at the Trotter House, and a talk by Dennis Hayashi, director of the Office for Civil Rights and the hi ghest-ranking Asian Pacific American in the Clinton Cabinet, at 4:30 p.m. April 2 in the Law School’s Hutchins Hall.
