Vice President Farris W. Womack has announced that applications are being accepted for the 1994 Management Institute for Business and Finance staff.
The intensive course is designed to provide professional and administrative staff with leadership and management training, as well as a broad perspective about the special needs of higher education.
Those attending the institute are expected to graduate with a deeper understanding of:
—The place of higher education in society and the U-M’s place within higher education.
—The issues facing higher education in the 1990s and beyond.
—The “balance of powers” and decision-making processes that govern an institution of higher education.
—The major divisions within universities and relationships among them.
—Fiscal management in higher education.
—How to manage people to achieve top quality service.
Participants also will work in teams on a term project. Each team will research a current issue facing the University and higher education. All team members will contribute to the project’s development and participate in the class presentation at the conclusion of the institute.
Participants will be selected primarily from Business and Finance departments, although a few will be chosen from other units.
Employees who have the desire and potential to become strong managers and leaders, two years of full-time U-M service, and education or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree may nominate themselves or be nominated by a supervisor or manager.
Selection of participants will be done by a committee based on applicants’ interpersonal abilities, organizational skills and organization perspective, and will be sensitive to the diverse character of the University community and to the need to provide enlightened leadership as the U-M goes into the next decade.
The institute will require two intensive weekends (Jan. 14–15 and Feb. 11–12) and seven full-day seminars (Jan. 21, 28, Feb. 4, 18, 25 and March 4, 11). Participants must be available to attend all sessions, including the two overnight weekend sessions. Sessions will include lectures and conversations with senior administrators as practitioners of higher education management.
The nomination deadline is Oct. 1. Applications are available from Jill Blythman, 3032 Fleming Administration Building, 764-7270. She can be reached also via e-mail and Banyan Vines.
