Apple and Baker are visiting writers this month;
will read from works

Max Apple, author of Roommates, and poet David Baker will present their works in the Visiting Writers Series this month.
Sponsored by the Department of English and Borders Books and Music, the series features fiction and poetry readings by distinguished writers throughout the academic year. Most readings are free to the public.
Apple, who will give his reading at 3:30 p.m. today (Jan. 23) in Rackham Auditorium during the Hopwood Underclassmen Awards Ceremony, received his bachelor’s degree from the U-M in 1963 and a doctorate in 1970.
His book Roommates: My Grandfather’s Story, which recently was made into a feature film starring Peter Falk, chronicles the true story of Apple’s 40-year relationship with his grandfather, Rocky Goodstein, who emigrated from Lithuania to Michigan and later lived with Apple in Ann Arbor.
Baker, who is a visiting professor in English, will present his reading at 5 p.m. Thurs. (Jan. 25) in Rackham Amphitheater.
A professor of English at Denison University in Ohio, Baker is author of four books of poetry, including After the Reunion, Laws of the Land, Haunts and Sweet Home, Saturday Night.
