Antonia C. Novello, the 14th surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service, will receive the Alumnae Council’s 1993 Athena Award. Novello is the first woman and first Hispanic surgeon general.
The Athena Award, established in 1973, is presented each year to an alumna for professional excellence and public service.
The award will be presented by President James J. Duderstadt at the annual Alumnae Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. June 4 in the Michigan League Ballroom. Robert C. Kelsch, professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases and Novello’s mentor during her U-M residency, will introduce her. A public reception will follow in the Kalamazoo Room.
Novello, a pediatric intern and resident at U-M Hospitals in 1970–73, was named Intern of the Year in 1970 and trained in pediatric nephrology at U-M in 1974.
After eight years in private practice, she entered the U.S. Public Health Service and later became director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
As surgeon general, Novello has been dedicated to children’s, women’s and minority health issues, and has focused on the dangers of smoking.
