The Department of Anthropology ranks first in the nation in anthropological archaeology, according to a survey by the Society for American Archaeology.

The survey of 163 archaeologists with Ph.D.s employed in professional positions ranked the U-M department first among the nation’s archaeology Ph.D. programs, followed by the University of Arizona and the University of California, Berkeley.

Richard I. Ford, anthropology department chair, said that the single most important characteristic of a graduate program identified by the Society is the quality of the faculty. In addition, the department was highly rated in such program characteristics as research opportunities for students, graduate student funding, curriculum and quality of the University Library.
