AIDS Awareness Week marked by number of programs

Approximately 20 U-M organizations and the city of Ann Arbor are joining together to mark Oct. 18–24 as AIDS Awareness Week.

In her proclamation recognizing AIDS Awareness Week, Ann Arbor Mayor Ingrid Sheldon said: “All of us are affected by the present and future spread of AIDS and there is great concern about the health of our community.

“We need to lend visibility and support to the work that needs to be done, particularly in prevention, compassion, and serving the needs of those living with HIV/AIDS and others affected by it.”

A number of programs have been scheduled to encourage awareness and dialogue about many of the issues surrounding the AIDS pandemic and its impact on the local community. Programs include performances, exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions and lectures.

Among the highlights of the events will be an exhibition of eight 12×12-foot panels from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt Oct. 21–24 at the Michigan League, and five performances of Quilt, A Musical Celebration Oct. 20–24 by the Musical Theatre Program at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre.
