Julia Adler-Milstein

Julia Adler-Milstein, an assistant professor jointly appointed to the School of Information and its School of Public Health, has published extensively on the adoption of health information technology. She will serve as guest editor for the annual issue of The American Journal of Managed Care devoted to that technology. Adler-Milstein has led a series of national surveys on health information exchange, and her research examines the effect of the technology’s implementation on healthcare cost and efficiency.

The Detroit Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has named Michigan Radio reporter Lindsey Smith the Young Journalist of the Year. Based in Grand Rapids, Smith is Michigan Radio’s West Michigan reporter. Judges noted a series of reports she did in 2013 about the Muskegon Heights public school district, the first in the state to be run by a charter school company. Smith produced a series of stories looking at the difficulty the company was having, and how it was cutting corners, including hiring non-certified teachers.

Margaret Wooldridge

Margaret Wooldridge, an Arthur F. Thurnau professor of mechanical engineering, is one of six 2013 recipients of the prestigious E.O. Lawrence Award, the U.S. Department of Energy agency’s highest award for mid-career scientists. The award celebrates contributions in research and development that support the department’s science, energy and national security missions. Wooldridge’s award acknowledges her work advancing energy science and innovation.

Lynn Conway, emerita professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the College of Engineering, has been called the “hidden hand” in the 1980s microchip design revolution that made today’s personal computers and smartphones possible. Conway will be named a fellow at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. on April 26. She’s being honored for developing and spreading new ways to design integrated circuits. 

Richard Abel

Richard Abel, emeritus professor of international cinema and media studies, has received the 2014 Distinguished Career Achievement Award from the Society of Cinema and Media Studies. The award was presented in March at the annual SCMC conference. With more than 10 books authored and edited as well as more than 100 essays, Abel has made foundational contributions to the field of early cinema studies.
