The Kavli Foundation’s board of directors has announced the election ofPresident Mary Sue Coleman to the board. Rockell N. Hankin, chairman of The Kavli Foundation, said Coleman has demonstrated the kind of vision and leadership that has made her one of the nation’s most admired academic presidents. The Kavli Foundation supports basic science in the areas of astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience and theoretical physics.
Ursula Jakob, professor of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, and professor of biological chemistry, Medical School, has been elected to membership in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich, Germany. Scholars are elected for research that has contributed to a substantial increase of knowledge concerning their subject. Jakob researches the biochemical aspects of the bacterial response to heat shock and oxidative stress. In 2008, her group was the first to determine how bleach kills bacteria.
