Tyson Kim, a U-M researcher and Kellogg Eye Center resident, recently was named the winner at the Fast Forward Medical Innovation’s 2017 Biomedical Innovation Cup. The winning project that Kim developed is called the RetinaScope, a compact, handheld device that produces wide-angle retinal images similar to those obtained with tabletop retinal cameras. The technology is a portable and less expensive alternative to traditional tabletop retinal cameras, providing high-quality imaging, lowering overhead costs and enabling more frequent eye screening within primary care clinics. The smartphone device screens for diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of preventable blindness among Americans. Fast Forward Medical Innovation is a unit of the Medical School Office of Research.
