Dr. Anna Lok, director of clinical hepatology at the University of Michigan Health System, was given the William Beaumont Award by the American Gastroenterological Association during Digestive Disease Week. She led clinical trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine that led to an interferon-free oral treatment using direct viral agents. Lok is also the Alice Lohrman Andrews Research Professor of Hepatology, assistant dean for Clinical Research and professor of internal medicine, Medical School.
The Garden Club of America has awarded Bob Grese, director of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum, with an honorary membership. Established in 1913, GCA has long championed the conservation and study of the nation’s designed landscapes and gardens. Grese was commended for his work in landscape design, and for becoming an authority on Jens Jensen and studies of ecological landscape design. He also is the Theodore Roosevelt Professor of Ecosystem Management, and a professor of natural resources, School of Natural Resources and Environment.
Christopher Friese, professor of nursing, School of Nursing, is among 2016-17 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows named recently by the National Academy of Medicine and RWJF. Beginning in September, the eight health professionals selected will spend a year in Washington, D.C., working on health-related legislative and regulatory issues. After that, fellows continue to receive support to sustain their development as health policy leaders.
Lisa Molnar, associate research scientist, Behavioral Sciences Group, U-M Transportation Research Institute, is among 94 exemplary professionals named as new fellows by the Gerontological Society of America. The status is an acknowledgment of outstanding and continuing work in gerontology. The new fellows will be formally recognized during GSA’s 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting, Nov. 16-20 in New Orleans.
