The Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation has awarded Tailen Hsing and Jackie Miller, both Department of Statistics faculty, a $248,000 grant for their project Researching the HyFlex+ Instructional Model of Blended Learning. They will study the effectiveness of a new hybrid instructional model for introductory statistics courses. It is among Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research awarded this year by the National Science Foundation. Hsing is Michael B. Woodroofe Collegiate Professor of Statistics and professor of statistics, LSA. Miller is a lecturer III in statistics, LSA.

John M. Swales, professor emeritus of linguistics and former director of the English Language Institute, 1985-2001, will be awarded a Ph.D. honoris causa by the University of Silesia in southern Poland on Oct. 26. He was awarded a similar degree by Uppsala University in 2004.
