Marianne Udow-Phillips has been elected to join the Arbor Research Board of Directors starting in January. She currently is the director of the U-M Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation. Udow-Phillips previously served as director of the Michigan Department of Human Services from 2004-07. Udow-Phillips came to state service from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, where she served in a number of leadership roles for more than 20 years.

Rosemary Sarri

Rosemary Sarri, professor emerita at the School of Social Work and senior researcher at the Institute for Social Research, was honored on Oct. 31 with a School of Social Work Distinguished Alumni Award. It recognizes SSW alumni whose achievements exemplify the values of the SSW and who have made an exceptional impact on the profession, the community and social work. She has been appointed by the minister of education to the Russian Social Welfare Commission to help develop educational standards and curriculum guidelines for social work education programs in Russia.

Robert Axelrod, Walgreen Professor for the Study of Human Understanding at the University of Michigan; professor of political science, LSA; and professor of public policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, recently received the National Medal of Science from President Obama. It is the nation’s highest honor for achievement in the field of science and engineering. Axelrod wrote “The Evolution of Cooperation,” which outlines a recipe for de-escalating conflict.
