Patricia Abbott, associate professor of nursing, School of Nursing, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance. It is the first time a woman and a nurse has been elected to the board. OSEHRA President Seong Mun said Abbott would bring to the board a rare combination of academic and clinical experience, along with unparalleled leadership and expertise in health informatics in the academic community. Abbott joined the five-member board Oct. 1.

Leslie Hollingsworth

Leslie Hollingsworth, associate professor of social work, School of Social Work, is one of two recipients of the 2014 SAGE/Council on Social Work Education Innovative Teaching Award. The award recognizes her work incorporating Afrocentric perspectives in teaching social work practice with African-descended people. She is being honored on Oct. 23 at the Council on Social Work Education annual meeting.

Richard Adler, associate professor of biology and microbiology, Department of Natural Sciences, College of Arts, Sciences and Letters, UM-Dearborn, was among 15 to receive top honors at The Historical Society of Michigan annual State History Conference Sept. 26-28 in Big Rapids. Adler was honored for “Cholera in Detroit: A History.” The awards are presented for outstanding contributions to the appreciation, collection, preservation and/or promotion of state and local history.

John Tropman

John Tropman, professor of social work, School of Social Work, has been selected to be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. The academy is an honorific society of distinguished scholars and practitioners dedicated to achieving excellence in the field of social work and social welfare through high-impact work that advances social good. Tropman is being inducted Oct. 25.

Dr. Ana Baylin, associate professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health, and an adjunct assistant professor at Brown University, has been named to the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate Research Committee for a two-year term. Baylin will oversee the allocation of funds to research projects that seek to prevent and treat heart disease and stroke. In 2014, the association allocated more than $26 million for 203 new research studies at 29 research institutions in the Midwest.
