Three School of Nursing faculty members have been selected for induction as fellows in the American Academy of Nursing. They are: Lisa Kane Low, associate professor and coordinator of the Nurse Midwifery Education Program; Marjorie McCullagh, associate professor and director of the Occupational Health Nursing Program; and Denise Saint Arnault, associate professor and interim director of graduate programs. Candidates require the sponsorship of two current fellows and are reviewed for significant contributions to nursing and health care. They will be inducted during the AAN’s annual conference in October in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Yvonne Kapila, professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry, who also directs the school’s Global Oral Health Initiative, has received the International Association for Dental Research 2014 Innovation in Oral Care Award. It is for her research about the effect a common food preservative, nisin, may have inhibiting the growth of biofilms that lead to tooth decay and periodontal disease. The award was presented at the association’s annual meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

Charles Doering, Lizhen Ji and Kartik Prasanna are all recipients of 2014 Simons Fellowships. The fellowships provide funds to faculty for up to a semester-long research leave from classroom teaching and administrative obligations. The goal of the Simons Fellows Program is to make it easier to take such leaves, or to extend sabbatical leaves by an extra half year. Doering is professor of mathematics, physics, and complex systems, and acting director of Complex Systems in LSA. Lizhen is a professor of mathematics, and Prasanna is associate professor of mathematics, both in LSA.

Mark Newman

Mark Newman, Paul Dirac Collegiate Professor of Physics and Professor of Complex Systems, is the winner of the 2014 Lagrange Prize from the CRT Foundation. This is the most significant international award for complexity science, established by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino and coordinated by the Institute for Scientific Interchange Foundation. Newman is awarded the prize for outstanding interdisciplinary work at the intersection of physics computational and social sciences that has opened the door to a deeper understanding of complex systems
